  1. The vine phenomenon is a great example of how small can be really significant--that people are suddenly enchanted with these apparently insignificant clips just shows an important lesson we've been talking about in class. Certainly something as simple as the crankiness of cats is an almost endless topic. I've had my cat on a leash before, and it works about this well with him. The idea of the "cat person" is, of someone who likes this refusal, is another related issue. We will read Bartleby, a short story by Melville, later this year, and this is perhaps one of the best demonstrations of the essence of that story.

  2. A comment from Madeline, who wasn't able to post it:

I felt the need to share this vine as I think it also related to KK’s vine that she shared. In KK’s vine, there is a cat that is being dragged across the grass, which is something that you normally do not see every day. Similarly, during the week of midterms (and basically every week at Furman), there are students who seem to allow other people or other things drag them through life. We often feel so burdened with schoolwork and other activities that we are constantly sleep deprived and just plain exhausted.

The vine that I shared expresses a similar attitude of the cat in KK’s vine. In the video, a little girl is complaining about how she is tired and wants to take a nap on the beach. She is wining and crying and simply just lies down in the middle of the sand. She yells, “I am taking a nap, I am taking a nap right here.” Her father kindly agrees and the little girl responds with “goodnight.”

While it would not be socially acceptable for a college student to do this in public, many of us frequently feel this way. Our lack of sleep causes us to not only become drowsy and weary throughout the day, but also very cranky. All we want to do is sleep, and any location will suffice if we are exhausted enough. I have found myself falling asleep while sitting upright in a chair, during class, and in the library when I am supposed to be studying. These are not common or the correct places for me to sleep, just like the beach is not exactly the ideal location for a toddler to be sleeping either. Nevertheless, our weariness will allow this to happen, as our bodies are no longer able to function with the energy that we have provided with them.

I love this vine, and it is a great reminder of how sometimes our inner child needs to come out, and we just need to catch a few z’s every once in a while."

  3. I have to say that this vine totally cracked me up. While I'm not the biggest fan of vine, vines like this, including animals or little kids make me laugh. I think that's because there is a sort of innocence and they aren't trying to hard. What I don't like about vine is the actual "viners." I feel like these people have sort of become famous for no reason and they've created their own type of stardom. I think this aspect of vine is a little ridiculous and it has gotten the app way too much attention. But I love the ones like this!!
